Coffee and soya milk

Soya milk is also called soy milk. Recently soya milk has been a subject of controversy. Some experts say we should run far away from soya milk while others claim it is a miracle drink. What should you do? The answer is complicated. The simple answer is to take a look at your medical history and ask your doctor. Why? Soya often has estrogenic properties. Meaning soya can act like estrogen, causing an increase in estrogen levels. It can also act as an anti-estrogen, causing decreases in estrogen levels. This is important because soya will have different effects on women who are pre-menopausal, post-menopausal, and who have had breast or uterine cancers.

What is soy milk powder?

Soy milk powder is soy milk without water. It is similar to dried milk and usually has a longer shelf life than liquid soy milk. The color is white or beige color. It can be added to coffee, giving the coffee a slightly gritty texture. It can also be added to smoothies as a nutritional supplement.

  • High source of protein. Protein is necessary for several bodily functions, including muscle development, muscle recovery, and a necessary component for growth and development in children, teens, and pregnant women. Enriched soy contains high amounts of vitamins and minerals.
  • Helps reduce risk of heart disease and osteoporosis. Researchers at the University of Illinois found that soy protein is helps reduce the risk of developing heart disease and osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. 

Cons of drinking soy

  • Could cause mineral deficiencies. Consuming soy as a primary source of protein can cause your body to develop mineral deficiencies. This is due to the high levels of phytates found in soy which can bond with minerals (iron, zinc, and calcium). Once the soy bonds to the minerals, the body is unable to absorb them.
  • Could cause excessive levels of estrogen. Isoflavones, found naturally in soy is a type of estrogen. When consumed in excess amounts, estrogen can cause fat gain, water retention, bloatingIn excess, estrogen can cause. Fat gain is extremely detrimental because toxins are stored in fat. The more fat a person has, the more toxins they can store in their body. Estrogen is a necessary hormone for both men and women. Women with high levels of estrogen usually experience: irregular periods, light spotting, heavy bleeding, and more severe symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, or PMS. Men with high levels of estrogen typically have the following symptoms: erectile dysfunction, enlarged breasts, and infertility.
  • Could decrease fertility. A study published in the June 2010 issue of “Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology” stated that dietary soy products, such as soy milk, decreased sperm mobility and sperm count.
  • Soy and estrogen, Some soy products contain estrogen-like chemicals that could cause constipation, bloating, and nausea.  It is best to limit your intake of soy isoflavone supplements and foods made with textured vegetable protein and soy protein isolate. These soy ingredients are often found in protein powders and nutrition bars.

Can CBD oil be added to soy coffee?
